subjects

there was an article in the himalayan times. its about what you learnt in school. subjects which we were made to take meant more than the contents of the subjects itself. i realised how short sighted we were and our focus was a little bit wrong.

school teaches us about writing skills. essays we write meant more than marks we had to score to achieve good grades. its to train us to write resumes to impress your future employers and reports everyone can understand. imagine if you didn;t develop your writing skills and how much you;ll stand to lose.

school teaches us about attention to details. mathematics teaches you not only to solve mathematical problems, but it requires you to pay close attention to the methods you use and the numbers. making sure you don;t use the wrong value for the wrong formula.

there are many other things about it. this is merely a tip of the ice berg. this article really makes one wonder if we have been focusing on the wrong aspects of learning in school.

the orphanage

looking into their eyes, they know nothing about their parents. they do not even know why they are there in the first place. most probably they don;t truly understand their own situation yet. like most children here in this society, they have 3 meals a day and have clean clothes and a nice little bed for them to sleep. they have many toys and friends to play with.

what they lack, love and attention.

they get stuffed with food 3 times a day, some through tubes inserted in their noses. the clean clothes they wear is a common pool of clothes where everyone in the room shares them. regardless of boy or girl. they have nice beds to sleep in, they just don;t have anyone to kiss them goodnight. some are lucky as they don;t get tied to the bed. the toys they have a mostly broken, but still usable. friends they have are all in the same situation. they don;t have parents. they were abandoned.

another group of new borns, have hardly less than 6 months to live. they are suffering from the effects of a war that has ended 3o years ago. they spent the rest of their short lives bedridden. they will die with their stomachs full. thats they best anyone could do.

and even then, thousands of kilometers away from this place, children in this society still complains of everything else they have.
